Patrice Evra has thrown a massive name into the Manchester United managerial hat and Luis Enrique is reportedly “keen” on the idea .
The PSG boss, who led the French side to Champions League glory last season without Messi, Mbappe or Neymar, is being lined up as a “dream” alternative to Michael Carrick . And according to sources in France, he’d be interested .
EVRA’S VERDICT
“I’m not talking to the Man United board or Sir Jim Ratcliffe, but in my honest opinion, with no disrespect to PSG or Nasser Al Khelaifi, but Luis Enrique would be a dream coach for Man United,” the former defender told Stake.
“I love the man, I love his philosophy, what he went through in his personal life and overcame it shows his personality. The job he’s done at PSG by bringing them a Champions League without Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe or Neymar, it’s a fantastic job.
“Players would have to work really hard to play for Man United, they’ll have to run a lot and I think Enrique would bring that.”
THE TIMING
Enrique is in talks to extend his PSG contract, but no deal has been signed . French outlet Le10Sport claims the Spaniard would be “keen” on the United job if it became available especially with Champions League qualification looking likely .
The 55 year old has previous Premier League interest, having been linked with Chelsea before they appointed Liam Rosenior . He’s won the lot in France and Europe. United would be a new challenge.
THE CARRICK FACTOR
Michael Carrick has done brilliantly since taking over, six wins in eight games, third in the table, Champions League football in sight . But the debate rages: is he ready for the full time job, or do United need a proven winner?
Evra’s comments won’t help Carrick’s case. When a club legend starts naming dream coaches, it puts pressure on the board.
THE ASTON VILLA TEST
Carrick’s United face a massive game on Sunday. Aston Villa at Old Trafford. Win, and they cement their top four spot. Lose, and the questions get louder.
Enrique will be watching. Everyone will be watching.
THE VERDICT
Carrick deserves credit for steadying the ship. But Luis Enrique is a Champions League winner with a clear philosophy and a track record of developing young players . If United want a statement appointment, he’s exactly that.
And if reports are true that he’s keen, the ball’s in United’s court. Make a move, or stick with the interim.
Big decision coming.
