Wolves Captaincy Shift: Semedo Replaces Lemina Amid Tensions

Defensive midfielder Mario Lemina has been ousted as Wolverhampton Wanderers skipper by Portuguese full-back Nelson Semedo, coach Gary O’Neil confirmed on Friday, days following the Gabon player’s clash with West Ham United’s Jarrod Bowen.

The 31-year-old Lemina apologised after the quarrel, which unfolded after Wolves endured a 2-1 Premier League loss against 14th-placed West Ham on Monday in which Bowen netted the decisive goal for the hosts.
Lemina has played in 75 matches for Wolves since transferring from French club Nice last year.

“We’ve decided to hand the captaincy to Nelson, and Nelson will lead the squad from now on,” O’Neil informed journalists.

“Naturally, the other evening triggered the discussion, but it was a necessary conversation that had to take place. Mario and I now have a shared understanding of how we proceed and what lies ahead.

“We’ve had many talks this week – me, Mario, and a few other experienced players. What occurred after the game is unacceptable.

“We all recognise tempers can flare, that we’re in a difficult period, and everyone’s striving and giving their all under immense strain and tension. But such incidents won’t be repeated, certainly.”

O’Neil mentioned that Lemina will remain a member of the senior contingent.

The Midlands team are 19th in the Premier League standings with nine points from 15 fixtures, having secured only two wins so far. They are set to welcome newly-promoted Ipswich Town, currently in 18th place, on Saturday.
