Barcelona 3-0 Atletico Madrid (Atletico win 4-3 on aggregate)
Atletico Madrid were battered, bruised and absolutely clinging on by their fingernails but they’re through to the Copa del Rey final for the first time since 2013 .
Diego Simeone’s men somehow survived a 3-0 hammering at Camp Nou, with their 4-0 first leg cushion reduced to a single goal by the final whistle . Marc Bernal scored twice, Raphinha added a penalty, and Barcelona threw everything including the kitchen sink at a miraculous comeback.
They fell just short. And Atletico are in the Seville final on April 18.
THE NIGHTMARE START
Barcelona came out like their lives depended on it. Fermin Lopez tested the waters early. Jules Kounde went off injured inside the opening stages, a blow that could have derailed lesser sides .
But Flick’s men kept coming. Ferran Torres fired wide, then tested Musso at the near post. The pressure was relentless.
Then came the breakthrough. Teen sensation Lamine Yamal, 18, drilled across goal for fellow 18 year old Marc Bernal to finish from close range . One kid setting up another. The future of Barcelona, right there.
THE SECOND BLOW
Ademola Lookman headed wide for Atletico, a miss that felt huge when Pedri was tripped in the box by Marc Pubill just before half time . Raphinha sent Musso the wrong way from the spot, and suddenly that 4-0 lead looked very vulnerable.
Joao Cancelo almost grabbed a third before the break, Musso saving at full stretch. Atletico were on the ropes, swinging wildly, just trying to survive.
THE FINAL FRENZY
Bernal’s second was a thing of beauty, volleying home Cancelo’s swirling cross to set up a frantic finale . Camp Nou erupted. One more goal and we’re going to extra time. One more and the miracle’s alive.
Flick threw centre back Ronald Araujo up front. Literally. A defender leading the line in search of a fourth. Gerard Martin hammered narrowly over. The fans roared through six minutes of stoppage time.
But Atletico held. Just.
SIMEONE’S VERDICT
“We were close to getting back to the final in recent years, and in this two legged game we were better than Barcelona,” Simeone insisted afterwards.
Better over two legs? Absolutely. That first leg 4-0 was as dominant as it gets. But tonight? They were hanging on by their fingertips.
“It’s been five years since we won a trophy, we wanted to get to a final for our fans,” said midfielder Koke. “We knew we would be up against it… you have to suffer and resist. The team did what it had to do.”
FLICK’S PRIDE
“We are disappointed but we can be very proud about the performance we showed today,” Barca boss Hansi Flick said. “It was an amazing game from us and we created a lot of chances to score even more goals.”
He’s right. This wasn’t a failure, it was a statement. Barcelona took one of Europe’s toughest sides to the absolute limit and nearly pulled off the impossible.
“The quality we saw today from the team, it’s there, it’s unbelievable,” Flick added. “I’m really proud of my team.”
WHAT NOW
Atletico face either Real Sociedad or Athletic Bilbao in the final. They’ll go in as favourites, but tonight showed nothing’s guaranteed.
Barcelona? They’ve got La Liga to focus on, four points clear of Real Madrid and a Champions League last 16 tie with Newcastle . If they play like this, anyone’s in trouble.
And Antoine Griezmann? The Frenchman’s future is up in the air, with MLS side Orlando City circling . Simeone hopes he’ll stay for the final: “He deserves it more than anyone.”
One thing’s certain, this Atletico side know how to suffer. And in cup football, that’s half the battle.
