Barcelona have made a major U turn in their summer transfer plans, ruling out a move for Borussia Dortmund and Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck after a detailed internal scouting review.
The Catalan giants had placed the left footed centre back on their shortlist, with his strong Bundesliga form and pre existing relationship with boss Hansi Flick making him a seemingly logical target. It was Flick, after all, who handed Schlotterbeck his national team debut during his time as Germany manager.
But according to reports from SPORT, the club’s sporting department have pulled the plug after a deep dive into his suitability. While they acknowledge his technical quality and composure in possession, major doubts over one key attribute have scuppered the deal.
“The feeling is he lacks the sheer recovery pace needed for the system,” a source close to the club explained. Flick’s high line, aggressive pressing game demands lightning speed at the back, and the analysis concluded the 25 year old would be exposed too often.
With the financial margins for error so thin, Barca have decided they cannot compromise on this physical prerequisite. The decision is said to be final, taking them out of the running for a player also linked with Bayern Munich and several Premier League sides.
Instead, the Blaugrana have narrowed their focus to two primary targets. The dream signing remains Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni, viewed as the perfect prototype for the role. Should that prove too difficult, Tottenham’s flying Dutchman Micky van de Ven is the clear backup option, with the player himself reportedly keen on a switch.
For Schlotterbeck, it’s a significant blow. A potential reunion with his former national team boss is off the table, and one of Europe’s elite has effectively questioned his ability to fit a top level, proactive style. For Barcelona, the ruthless analysis shows a renewed focus on a very specific profile as they rebuild under Flick.
