Chelle’s Eagles Belief: “My Vision Is Clear” After Algeria Masterclass Sets Up Morocco AFCON Showdown
Super Eagles boss Eric Chelle hailed his side’s discipline and maturity after a commanding 2-0 victory over Algeria booked Nigeria a record 16th Africa Cup of Nations semi final.
Speaking after the quarter final win in Marrakech, Chelle said his players executed a perfect game plan. “I am extremely proud of the boys. They were happy, focused, and brave,” he told reporters. “We worked hard, and my vision is clearly taking shape in this team.”
The match was a tense affair for long periods, with Algeria probing. Chelle praised his side’s patience before the decisive moments after the break. “For 45 minutes, we stayed calm. I told the players to trust the process. When the moment came, we struck with authority,” he added.
The breakthrough came from Victor Osimhen, a goal Chelle said transformed the contest. “That first goal was important. It released the pressure and gave us belief to play our football.” The lead was sealed by Akor Adams’ cool finish, which the coach pointed to as a sign of their growing ruthlessness. “We were ruthless when opportunities came. That is the mentality we want at this level.”
Defensively, Nigeria were rarely troubled, snuffing out Algeria’s late push with ease. “Our defence stayed compact and intelligent. We managed the game well and showed maturity,” Chelle stated.
The reward is a monumental semi final against hosts Morocco in Rabat on Wednesday. Chelle acknowledges the scale of the challenge but brims with belief. “Morocco are strong and playing at home. There will be pressure, but we respect them and believe in ourselves,” he said.
With just days to prepare, the focus is now on recovery. “We will rest, analyse, and prepare. The best team will win, and we want to be that team,” Chelle added. The Super Eagles face their sternest test yet at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, with a place in the final at stake.
