Eric Garcia: Super Cup Win Can Spark Barca Treble Charge Again

Eric Garcia has warned rivals that Barcelona are ready to use the Spanish Super Cup as another springboard to a trophy laden season, just like they did last year.

The defender believes lifting the trophy in Saudi Arabia on Sunday would inject the squad with a massive dose of confidence for the gruelling months ahead. Hansi Flick’s side famously clinched the Super Cup last January before marching on to a domestic double, and Garcia reckons history can repeat itself.

“We’re going for the Super Cup now, for the title. For us, winning it would mean what it meant last year,” Garcia told reporters out in Jeddah. “It’s January, we’re getting closer every day, and that would give us extra confidence. Coming back with the title gives you a real boost.”

His comments come as Barca prepare for another El Clásico final against Real Madrid, a repeat of last year’s showpiece. The Catalans have looked sharp in the desert, but they know the final is a different beast entirely.

Garcia, who’s been a versatile figure for Flick this term, also opened up on his own role and the form of his mate, goalkeeper Joan Garcia. “I’m playing in many different positions and they all have their challenges. But I like them all and I feel comfortable,” he said.

Praising the young stopper, he added: “Having him as my goalkeeper, and him being my friend, is really great. The saves he makes even surprise us at times, to be honest.”

First focus is on navigating past a fired up Real Madrid and claiming that first bit of silverware. Should they do it, the belief within the camp will be sky high. Then it’s straight back to business, with a Copa del Rey tie against Racing Santander waiting. The message from Garcia is clear: win Sunday, and the floodgates could open again.
