Freiburg Admit Defensive Struggles but Praise Courage After 6–2 Hammering by Bayern

SC Freiburg staff and players tried to take positives from their bruising 6–2 defeat to Bayern Munich, insisting they’d rather go down swinging than sit deep and crumble.

Despite racing into a shock two goal lead through set pieces, Freiburg were eventually torn apart by Bayern’s attacking wave, with Michael Olise and Luis Díaz causing chaos down the flanks. Bayern’s quality told, but head coach Julian Schuster said he still liked what he saw in terms of attitude.

“That’s how I want to see my team,” Schuster said after full time. “I’d rather lose with the courage to try. We definitely have to learn these things, but I prefer it that way.”

Maximilian Eggestein admitted Freiburg simply couldn’t cope in wide areas once Bayern picked up pace. “We allowed too much in one on ones, especially against Luis Díaz and Olise. They find solutions and take shots, we can’t always prevent that,” he said. “Taken altogether, we allowed too many situations on the wings.”

Defender Matthias Ginter felt the match flipped before the interval. Freiburg led early, but Bayern created waves of pressure long before the comeback started. “It basically went very well. It might have been different if we had managed to stay in the lead at half time,” he said. “But to be honest, they had so many situations in and around our box, it was clear it would happen sooner or later.”

The loss leaves Freiburg needing a response and a quick rethink defensively, especially on transitions and wide duels. But Schuster insists the courage to attack must remain if they’re to compete with Germany’s elite just with fewer gifts next time.
