Guimaraes Hails “Fighting Mentality” as Newcastle Stun Man City at St James’ Park

Bruno Guimaraes says Newcastle’s battling spirit was the difference as they toppled Manchester City 2–1, calling the win a statement performance after weeks of questions over the squad’s form and mentality.

The Brazilian midfielder, who played a key role in the midfield scrap, took to Instagram after the match to salute both teammates and fans. Sharing a collage of match images, he wrote: “What a performance from the whole team! We ran, fought, and gave everything to secure the three points against a great side! This is the mentality we need. Your support was essential once again. Howay the lads.”

It wasn’t a straightforward night. Newcastle raced ahead, only to see Ruben Dias level moments after the restart, sucking the air out of St James’ Park just as the game looked to be slipping away. But Eddie Howe’s side didn’t fold. They regrouped, pressed harder in midfield and found the winner through Harvey Barnes to send the home crowd bouncing.

Guimaraes’ praise felt more than just social media noise. Newcastle has been under scrutiny recently, with critics questioning their edge and consistency after a stuttering run of results. Saturday’s response against the reigning champions no less felt like a reminder that Howe’s squad still has plenty of fight in them.

If Newcastle can bottle this mentality and carry it into the festive run of fixtures, they’ll fancy their chances of climbing back toward the European spots. The challenge now is sustaining it, not just showing up when the big boys come to town.
