Eden Hazard has opened up on the move that defined and ultimately derailed his career, insisting he NEVER saw himself as Cristiano Ronaldo’s replacement at the Bernabeu.
The Belgian magician, now retired, reflected on his 2019 dream move from Chelsea in a raw and emotional interview with Julien Cazarre on RMC . And he’s not holding back.
THE DREAM
“Signing for Real Madrid was my dream,” Hazard admitted. “I wanted to leave even before my last season at Chelsea. I had said I would stay, but if Real Madrid came looking for me, I would leave.”
That’s the thing about dreams, sometimes they come true. Sometimes they turn into nightmares.
His unveiling at the Bernabeu was box office. Nearly 50,000 fans turned up to welcome their new galáctico. Hazard still gets emotional thinking about it.
“I felt like a kid during my presentation,” he said. “Before arriving, I heard many warnings about the dressing room and the difficulty of dealing with the players. But the reality was completely different. The welcome was fantastic from everyone ,from Zidane to the coaching staff to the players.”
Ramos. Modric. Kroos. All made him feel at home.
THE RONALDO ELEPHANT
Here’s the thing, Hazard walked into a club still reeling from Ronaldo’s departure to Juventus. The fans wanted a new hero. They wanted goals. They wanted magic every week.
Hazard wanted to be himself.
“I didn’t come here to replace Cristiano Ronaldo,” he stated firmly. “He scored a lot of goals in every game. Sometimes I didn’t even score one. I came here to be Eden Hazard and enjoy myself.”
That’s the difference. Ronaldo was a machine. Hazard was an artist. And artists, unfortunately, get broken.
THE MEUNIER MOMENT
Ask any Madrid fan about Thomas Meunier and watch their face drop.
“Thomas Meunier hit me with unforgettable force,” Hazard recalled of THAT tackle. “It was extremely hard for me and that slowed me down.”
Then came the relapse. Same ankle. Same problems. Different player.
“That’s when the problems started.”
Four years. 76 games. Seven goals. A fraction of the player who’d torn the Premier League apart. The dream turned sour, and everyone knew it.
THE PSG REJECTIONS
Here’s a wild stat, Hazard could have joined PSG multiple times. The money was there. The project was there. Nasser AlKhelaïfi came calling every year.
Hazard said no. Every single time.
“Every year, I was in contact with PSG. Nasser was coming, there was a lot of money, there was always a team to play in the Champions League. As things were going so well at Chelsea, my dream after that was to go to Real Madrid, not PSG.”
He held out for the white shirt. For the Bernabeu. For the dream.
THE LEGACY QUESTION
Hazard’s time at Madrid is seen as one of the great “what ifs” in modern football. A player who’d been arguably the Premier League’s best, arriving in his prime, only for his body to betray him.
But listen to him talk, and there’s no bitterness. No regret about the decision itself. Just the injuries.
He lived the dream, even if it hurt. And for a boy who grew up wanting to be a Galáctico, that’s something.
“I came here to be Eden Hazard.” And for a few fleeting moments, before Meunier’s challenge and that cursed ankle, he was.
