Nwabali the shootout hero as Nigeria’s Eagles clinch AFCON bronze: “It was a collective effort”

Stanley Nwabali emerged as Nigeria’s penalty king, but the Super Eagles keeper insisted the bronze medal was a triumph for the whole squad. His two spot kick saves sealed a tense 4–2 shootout victory over Egypt in the AFCON third place play off, a match that finished goalless after 90 cagey minutes.

The Chippa United stopper was deservedly named Man of the Match after his decisive interventions, but he was quick to deflect the praise. “This victory came from collective effort,” Nwabali said. “The defenders were incredible, and everyone stayed united. We had setbacks, but we stayed focused and believed in ourselves until the end.”

It was a nervy affair in Rabat, with both sides understandably desperate to avoid a costly error after the disappointment of missing out on the final. “It was a very difficult match against a great Egyptian team,” Nwabali admitted. “Nobody wanted to make a mistake.”

When it came down to penalties, however, the 28 year old was ice cold. “I stayed calm, read the takers and trusted my instincts,” he explained. “Thankfully, it worked for us.” His two saves from Egypt’s efforts settled the contest, ensuring Nigeria left the tournament with a medal around their necks.

For Nwabali, the individual accolade was secondary. “Being Man of the Match feels good, but winning the bronze medal for Nigeria matters more,” he noted. His performances throughout the competition has cemented his place as the nation’s number one, a far cry from the pre tournament doubts some had about the goalkeeping position.

The win gives Jose Peseiro’s side a tangible return from a campaign that promised more but ultimately fell short of the final. It’s a positive end, however, and provides a platform to build from. The Eagles now return home with some hardwear, and a shootout hero in Nwabali who, true to form, reckons the credit belongs to everyone.
