A summer transfer battle is brewing for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, with Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea all lining up for the Italian international should he decide to leave St James’ Park.
According to reports, the 24 year old is considering his future if Newcastle fail to secure Champions League football next season. While he and his family are currently settled on Tyneside, the club’s league position could trigger a major decision, alerting a host of top flight rivals.
The interest intensified on deadline day when Tonali’s representatives reportedly offered the player to Arsenal, an approach swiftly rebuffed by Newcastle. However, that brief contact is believed to have opened a dialogue, placing the Gunners in a strong position should a bidding war commence.
Mikel Arteta is said to be an admirer of Tonali’s dynamic, box to box profile and would have the financial muscle to meet a significant asking price. Chelsea have also been long term suitors and, despite a crowded midfield, could reignite their interest, especially if Enzo Fernandez departs or Romeo Lavia’s fitness issues persist.
Perhaps the most intriguing potential suitor is Manchester City. Pep Guardiola is known to be seeking a long term partner or eventual successor for Rodri, and Tonali’s blend of defensive grit and progressive passing fits the bill perfectly.
Newcastle, who signed Tonali for £55 million in 2023, remain determined to keep their star. But with the player’s camp reportedly assessing options and the Premier League’s heavyweights circling, the Magpies face a tense fight to retain one of their crown jewels come July.
