Nigeria have climbed three places to 38th in the latest FIFA World Rankings, a curious boost arriving just weeks after their 2026 World Cup dream was crushed in agonising fashion, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Eagles, who fell short in the high-stakes African qualifying play offs in Morocco, somehow find themselves moving up the global ladder in the same month hopes of reaching North America officially vanished. Not exactly a consolation prize, but it’s something to cling to after a bruising campaign.

The updated standings, released on Wednesday by world football governing body FIFA, reflect a frantic international window featuring 149 matches worldwide, including numerous high value qualifiers across Africa, Europe, and South America.

Gabon Thrashing Key to Nigeria’s Ranking Boost

Nigeria’s rise wasn’t random, it was powered largely by the 4–1 extra time demolition of Gabon in the play-off semifinal, a result that handed the Eagles a fat chunk of coefficient points.

Victor Osimhen led the charge with a brace, while Chidera Ejuke bagged his first senior Nigeria goal, a moment he’ll remember even if the campaign ended in heartbreak. The win threw Nigeria into the final and, more importantly, gave them a ranking boost at a critical moment.

The final against DR Congo finished 1-1 after extra time before Nigeria lost 4–3 on penalties, but crucially for FIFA’s ranking formula, shootout defeats count as draws, meaning the Eagles avoided losing points. DR Congo benefited massively, jumping to 56th overall after victories over Cameroon and Nigeria.

Where Nigeria Stand in Africa

Despite missing the World Cup ticket, Nigeria remain in the top five on the continent.

Africa Top 7:
1️⃣ Morocco (11)
2️⃣ Senegal (19)
3️⃣ Egypt (34)
4️⃣ Algeria (35)
5️⃣ Nigeria (38)
6️⃣ Tunisia (40)
7️⃣ Ivory Coast (41)

Ivory Coast slipped down the order after a dip in recent results, while Tunisia leapfrogged them into sixth place.

For Nigeria, it’s a return to upward movement after months of inconsistency. This is their highest rank since October 2024, when they briefly sat 36th. Their peak in recent years came in February 2024, hitting 28th after finishing runners-up at the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

Global Standings: Spain Still Top, Brazil Back Rising

There’s been little drama at the very top of the global table.

Top 10 Worldwide:
1️⃣ Spain
2️⃣ Argentina
3️⃣ France
4️⃣ England
5️⃣ Brazil (+2)
6️⃣ Portugal
7️⃣ Netherlands
8️⃣ Belgium
9️⃣ Germany
🔟 Croatia

Brazil climbed two spots after a strong window, nudging ahead of Portugal and the Netherlands, while England stay fourth despite growing criticism around performances.

What Next for Nigeria?

While the ranking increase won’t heal the wounds of failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, it offers a hint that the squad’s performances weren’t as dire as the outcome. With AFCON 2025 qualifiers looming and uncertainty still lingering around coaching decisions, Nigeria enter the next cycle with momentum, just not the kind fans wanted.

A rise without qualification is cold comfort, but it’s a platform. Now the Super Eagles has to prove it wasn’t a statistical fluke.
